The site was easy to find, and my family of 6 arrived at 7:30 a.m. to find the beach area with only 3 families. Jones Beach State Park and Jones Island which stretches east of the park were the creation of master builder Robert Moses in the 1920s.
On any hot summer day at Butcher Jones Beach, it is tricky to manage your way between a thousand people, loose dogs, coolers and barbecues, if you want to reach the cool water. This lake is set in the magnificent Sonoran Desert where horses are frequently seen.This site is 31 miles northeast of Mesa. It wasn't too crowded and I didn't see any dead fish floating around. Wild horses frequent the area and there are piles of poop around. All in all, it was an okay family day but next time, ill definitely bring better provisions.The boat cruise was very nice . Butcher Jones features a pleasant nature trail and a gently sloping beach which makes safe, gradual changes in depths adjacent to picnic area. Bring sunscreen, water, and pack a lunch/snack- there’s a lot of great places to take a break and enjoy the views. Trail runs along the side of the lake. And not a gourmet cheeseburger, but a normal snack shack one. It is a beautiful area though.
I can say the insects flying around did not seem to be dangerous.

The autumn forecast is calling for a beautiful weekend, but don’t plan on being able to spend any time outdoors at nearby Tonto National Forest recreation sites. There are 15 picnicking units with designated grills. Butcher Jones Beach, which can be reached by a road a few miles north of Saguaro del Norte, features swimming, picnic and restroom facilities.
