Decided to walk back on the road rather than going on the tiny trail and crossing the river again.Fun to explore the other side of Oxbow. Intermediate. July 23, 2020. It's a very short trail. There is no definitive date as to when it might reopen.
The water was flowing around 700 cfs which is low but made fishing and stand up paddleboarding a safe option. There is a lot of underbrush and some bugs. Add Your Trails. Hiking Bugs. Plus the beach area was like MTV Spring Break with lots of music and bros drinking white claws. So many loop trails that lead you back to the campgrounds so you never get lost!!
The road ends at a well maintained trail near the water's edge. Oxbow has some nice family-oriented aspects to it that are enjoyable as well. Only saw 1 other couple all morning. Lots of exploring options.Awesome little hike, amazing coming from Kansas. City of troutdale in the summertime provides a rescue lifeguard and rescue raft just 300 yards upstream from here at glen Otto park.Just canoed the Sandy putting in at Oxbow Regional Park and taking out at Lewis and Clark state park. Lots of people on the beaches, but I didn’t pass a soul on the trail!Great trail for a quick workout to get the blood pumping.Hiked with 5 & 7 yr olds, turned into a 5.7 mile day hike, stopped at the river for lunch.
Lovely area, but we couldn’t fully appreciate it because it was very hard to get around near the water without trekking through the natural habitat, which is supposed to be preserved. Saw woodpecker, a frog, and some very friendly deer! Most of your vertical is via a gravel service road from the parking area down to the river. Pick up a map for a better idea of the layout then record your route on here so you can navigate all the little side trails easily. I was surprised to see very little human pollution in the river being so close to Portland. Enjoy the quietness while you can!Didn't do the whole trail, but had some difficulty finding it...We followed the (gated) road down from the trail head that begins on the lane off Gordon Creek Rd. Nice walking by the river but its bumpy and slippery with many fist size volcanic river rock. Probably good fishing too. Lots of people on the beaches, but I didn’t pass a soul on the trail!Very gorgeous trials, but no dogs allowed? All of the trails along the river are GORGEOUS, and even the ones that take you up into the wooded section are mellow and beautiful with lots of lush ferns and greenery. Hood’s 1780s eruptions line the bank of the Sandy River at Oxbow Regional Park. Gresham, OR 1 1.7 mi 2.7 km #2 Park HQ to Ancient Forest. PLEASE DON’T BRING YOUR DOG....I am not sure why so many dog owners blatantly ignore this rule but we were there when there were 6 cars total on the parking lot and in spite of very clear “no dog” signs we saw three dogs. Carefull if you put out at Lewis and Clark the water there has some very dangerous undercurrents that have taken a few lives. Oxbow Regional Park is a 1,000-acre (4.0 km 2) natural area park located ten miles (16 km) southeast of Troutdale along the Sandy River in the U.S. state of Oregon.Owned and operated by Metro regional government, it hosts a yearly festival celebrating salmon. Very slippery if rainy, but the dog loved it.Longer than listed, about 5 miles.
I want to come back but very scared of the metro park not securing the place and fearful of my vehicle getting a window bashed even if I don't leave any valuables in the car.. Oh well it's gonna be a risk I guess! I was the only one on the trail and I loved it!! Cant wait to call this place home!!! The river is really neat; you can get out there through the grass easily, and the rocky shoreline is a lot of fun for just playing around or being peaceful. Limited parking on the shoulder of the road.Great shaded trail along river.Some muddy parts but there was almost always a branch off route to avoid it. Fun little challenge overall!As a gal who’s new to solo hiking, this was an amazing place to go!
