Fish always drag your line against anything they come near, which abrades the line and creates weak spots. But there are at least two distinct methods — leading and tracking.I just finished a series of test knots using old fly line and 25 lb. And many of them may weight next to nothing and have some wind resistance built in with hackle and feathers. I was disappointed when the line went slack and reeled my line in. The leader cuts a small slit in the fly line coating, so it ends up actually gripping the (usually) braided core. Test results will be coming soon.This setup is becoming very common because it allows for the overall system to have optimal casting performance (due to the lighter line in the reel) while having a stronger leader line at the business end to hold up to the sharp teeth and/or rough mouths of the target species.I would like to see the worlds fair knot included, especially for braid lineYes, I love the FG knot for tying to leaders which in my preference are always stronger than the mainlines. I’ll be continually adding to it as I test out more and more knots.There’s a fairly recent video floating around showing what was called the “GT knot that’s much stronger than the FG”, but the knot shown was not an actual GT knot and was undoubtedly much weaker than the FG.In my opinion, any informed “100% knot” claim should be followed by the specific lines it works on just like you did.Have you done a test between the snell knot and Palomar? I fish braid to mono. Although the kreh is already an easy knot I figured the canoe would be even quicker and uses less leader line (if retying often). But . The Trilene knot, on the other hand, takes a standard Clinch and adds a second wrap around the item being tied to. The coating has no strength at all. Used steady increasing force to break it. One knot I did not see mentioned was the Slim Beauty knot. I don’t recall the tippet ring catching in the guides. Instead of controlling the speed and position of the nymphs through the drift, we let the flies find their own way . My assumption for beefing up the strength of the Dropper Loop Knot would be to use more turns because they’ll help spread out the load across more surface area.Those knots are all very good knots, but they consistently fail before the line when under max tension when testing their breaking strength.Have you ever heard of a TN knot? Of course, not knowing +100% knots exist in the first place, you wouldn’t go so far as to test different lines, types, manufactures, so you tested with line you had on hand, and since none worked, you concluded a 100% knot must not exist.
It’s a great tailwater knot, and I’ve found it really works well for small flies or double-nymph rigs in the winter. )I attach a 6-8″ length of leader butt with a needle-nail knot. And I absolutely tried to repeat it but none of them happened twice with the same knot so I had to conclude that it was due to a blemish on the line.So I highly recommend this modified uni when using braid… it’s stronger, and you don’t have to thread the lure/hook through any loops to tie it.Luke – A suggestion – Have a separate section on Site called KNOTS- put your favorite knots (By now we all know what they are) in Alpha order .
